Alderney's commemorative program has long operated as a revenue-generating exercise for the tiny island's government, with coins struck by the Royal Mint on contract and sold primarily to collectors rather than circulated. The Remembrance Day issues in this series are among the most produced of the modern British commemorative type, targeted squarely at the poppy-appeal demographic.
Alderney was the only British territory to suffer full German military occupation during World War II, from 1940 until liberation in May 1945 — a fact that gives any Remembrance issue from this issuer a sharper historical edge than most.
