Reverse description The reverse, designed by Stuart Devlin, centres on a detailed depiction of Edinburgh Castle rising dramatically from its rocky volcanic outcrop, with a stairway ascending to the gatehouse and battlemented towers surmounted by flags. Surrounding the castle in the lower field are three heraldic roundels: at left, the cross of St George; at centre, the arms of the City of Edinburgh featuring the castle and supporters; and at right, a further armorial device bearing a ship. The denomination legend ONE POUND arcs across the upper field, flanked by decorative elements, with EDINBURGH inscribed above along the inner border.
