Reverse description The reverse displays an elaborately rendered Celtic cross, designed by Norman Sillman, occupying the full field of the coin. The cross features richly interlaced knotwork panels at each of the four terminals and is encircled by a ring of intertwined serpentine creatures with open jaws biting into the cross arms, executed in high relief with intricate Celtic zoomorphic ornament. At the centre of the cross, within a raised annular ring, is a stylised five-petalled Tudor rose in relief. The denomination ONE POUND is inscribed in the lower field, and the entire design is framed by a beaded border.
