Jersey's one-pound coins issued through the early 1990s drew on the island's maritime heritage at a moment when the Royal Mint was producing distinct reverse designs for each of the Crown Dependencies. The Gemini — a twin-masted trading vessel closely associated with Jersey's 19th-century cod fishing trade with Newfoundland — represents a specific chapter in the island's Atlantic commerce that effectively ended before the First World War.
