Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·1 POUND·2021 J.C
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description The reverse, designed by Ffion Gwillim and inspired by Sir John Tenniel's original Victorian illustrations, depicts a scene from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass. Alice stands to the left, dressed in her pinafore and striped stockings, facing the rotund twin figures of Tweedledee and Tweedledum at centre, one of whom raises an arm in an expressive gesture, with a bare tree and foliage in the background. The composition faithfully captures the linear engraving style of Tenniel's celebrated drawings, rendered in fine relief on a mirrored proof field. The legend THROUGH the LOOKING-GLASS appears in decorative mixed-case lettering across the lower portion of the coin.
