Reverse description The complete Royal Shield of Arms is displayed centrally, quartered into four sections: the first and fourth quarters bear the three passant guardant lions of England, the second quarter displays the rampant lion of Scotland within a double tressure flory-counter-flory, and the third quarter depicts the Irish harp. The denomination ONE POUND is inscribed vertically in the field to either side of the shield, flanking the arms. The design was created by Matthew Dent and represents the full achievement of the Royal Arms, a motif also used on the circulating base-metal one pound coin of the same period.
