Cyprus issued this proof in conjunction with the 1989 Boys' Play commemorative programme, part of a broader effort by the Central Bank to document vanishing folk traditions through its collector coin series — a policy Cyprus pursued with unusual consistency through the 1980s. The underlying games being commemorated had largely disappeared from active practice within a generation, accelerated by the displacement of communities following the 1974 Turkish invasion of the north.
