Obverse description Central field displays the elaborate triple-towered gate of Hamburg — the city's heraldic castle — rendered in fine relief with three fortified towers surmounted by battlements and a portcullis arch below, flanked by two additional towers on either side. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. An inner legend reads NACH. PORTUGALIS. SCHROT. VND. KORN, referencing the Portuguese weight and fineness standard to which the coin was struck. The outer legend reads MONETA. NOVA. AVREA. CIVITATIS. HAMBURGENSIS, identifying this as the new gold coin of the city of Hamburg.
