Horacio de la Costa, the Jesuit historian whose face appears on this denomination, is best known for his landmark work The Jesuits in the Philippines, 1581–1768 — a chronicle that ends precisely at the year the Society of Jesus was expelled from all Spanish territories by royal decree. The expulsion order, issued by Carlos III in 1767, removed the Jesuits from the Philippines entirely for nearly a century.
This coin belongs to the BSP's New Generation Currency series, introduced beginning in 2010 to improve security features and mechanical sorting compatibility with modern banking infrastructure.
