Obverse description Central device features a balance scale with two suspended pans, rendered in fine detail, symbolising justice. Beneath the scale, the Arabic word عدل (meaning 'Justice') is inscribed in large, bold calligraphy occupying the central field. The legend IMPERIAL BRITISH EAST AFRICA Co. curves along the periphery in raised Latin capitals, and the date 1888 appears in the lower exergue. The overall design is neatly contained within a plain raised rim.
