| Reverse description | An elaborate Baroque allegorical composition depicting Pope Innocent XII enthroned in a canopied chair at center, receiving representatives of the nations of the world in a consistory scene. Flanking the papal throne are standing allegorical figures bearing spears and tridents, while groups of exotic figures representing diverse peoples—some armed, some kneeling—are arranged symmetrically to either side in lively, deeply cut high relief. In the lower half, a large terrestrial globe dominates the exergual area, flanked by additional reclining figures and surmounted by the papal tiara and keys coat of arms with the date 1696; this composition alludes to the universal peace-making mission of the pontiff. The circular legend, divided by a floral ornament at the top, surrounds the entire scene within a toothed border. |
