Innocenzo XII issued this piastra to commemorate the Peace of Ryswick, concluded in September 1697, which ended the Nine Years' War and temporarily stabilized the fractured relationship between Louis XIV and the Grand Alliance. The Holy See had played no direct military role, but the papacy's interest in European peace — particularly against the Ottoman threat — made such commemorative issues a matter of diplomatic positioning as much as piety.
Innocenzo XII had already suppressed papal nepotism by formal decree in 1692, a reform that reshaped how the curia allocated patronage and resources, including the funding of commemorative coinage programs.
