Ettal Abbey's estate administration — the Klostergutsverwaltung — issued this note in 1917 as Notgeld, emergency small-change currency that proliferated across Germany once hoarding stripped pfennig coins from circulation. The monastery at Ettal had operated as a working agricultural and commercial estate for centuries, giving it both the institutional standing and the practical need to issue its own scrip to pay workers and suppliers on site.
The watermarked paper is notable for a 1-Pfennig denomination — most issuers at this level didn't bother with security features on such low-value emergency issues.
