Obverse description Central field displays the Bavarian lozengy arms (fusily in bend) in relief, with the monogram 'WH' (for Wilhelm Herzog, i.e. Duke Wilhelm V) prominently struck above the shield. The last two digits of the date, '87', appear to the left of the arms. The design is rendered in the hammered technique characteristic of late 16th-century German coinage, with an irregular flan and no formal border or legend. The overall composition is compact, reflecting the miniature format of this gold pattern Pfennig.
