Obverse description The Imperial German eagle displayed in high relief, facing the viewer with wings spread and head turned to the right. The breast bears a large quartered heraldic shield characteristic of the Wilhelm II type 1 design, with ornate detail throughout the plumage and talons. The eagle is surmounted by an Imperial crown. The mint mark letter 'A' appears twice in the lower field, flanking the base of the eagle, denoting the Berlin Mint.
