German prisoner-of-war camps during the First World War operated internal scrip systems partly as a control mechanism — by restricting officers to camp-issued currency, authorities could monitor purchasing activity and limit the accumulation of usable Reich marks that might fund an escape attempt. Stuttgart's officer camp was among those that ran a tiered denomination system, with the lowest values handling canteen transactions for tobacco, soap, and small sundries.

Paper scrip at this level saw heavy daily use and survives in quantity only because camps were periodically resupplied with fresh stock. Worn examples are the honest ones.
