Strasburg — the town in West Prussia, not Alsace — operated one of several officer-grade prisoner of war camps established by Germany during the First World War. Officers were housed separately from enlisted men under the terms of the Hague Conventions, and camp scrip was issued to allow them to purchase goods from the canteen without handling Reichsmark currency, which regulations discouraged.
The Kommandantur issued these notes internally, almost certainly printed locally given the modest production values typical of such camp issues. Survival rates vary considerably — some officers took scrip home as souvenirs; much was simply discarded at repatriation.
