Additional information

Simon August ruled Lippe-Detmold from 1734 until his death in 1782, a tenure long enough to see the county through the Seven Years' War, which ended the same year this coin was struck. The 1763 date places this issue in the immediate aftermath of that conflict, when small German territories scrambled to restabilize local economies disrupted by troop movements, requisitions, and the suspension of normal trade.

Lippe-Detmold was among the smallest of the German imperial counts, with a population under 30,000 and no significant mint tradition before the eighteenth century.
