Gebr. Koch was a textile manufacturing firm in Schöneck im Vogtland, a small town in the Saxon uplands long associated with the region's dense concentration of weaving and knitting industries. This piece is a privately issued Notgeld token — emergency small change produced by a commercial enterprise rather than a municipal authority, a practice that became widespread in Germany during and after World War I when official coinage all but vanished from everyday circulation. Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort years earlier.
