Mannschaftsgefangenenlager Salzwedel was an enlisted men's prisoner-of-war camp in the Altmark region of Prussia, holding primarily Russian, French, and British captives during the First World War. Camp-issued Lagergeld like this 1 Pfennig note was a deliberate policy instrument: by restricting prisoners to an internal scrip redeemable only within the camp canteen, German authorities prevented the accumulation of Reichsmark that might fund an escape attempt.
The 1916 dating places this note in the period of maximum camp population, when the German POW system was absorbing hundreds of thousands of men from the Eastern Front collapse.
