Additional information

Rudolf von Hohenegg served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1284 to 1290, a tenure marked by ongoing friction with the Habsburgs as Rudolf I of Germany consolidated territorial control across the eastern Alpine region. The Friesach mint, operating since the early twelfth century under Salzburg authority, was one of the most economically significant ecclesiastical mints in the German-speaking lands — Friesacher Pfennige circulated widely across Styria, Carinthia, and into the Balkans, functioning as a de facto regional trade currency for well over a century before local coinage crowded them out.
