Obverse description Within a beaded or raised inner circle, a stylized episcopal mitre or crown occupies the upper field, flanked by two pellets or globular ornaments to either side. Below the mitre, a schematic frontal face or mask is rendered in high relief in the primitive Romanesque style characteristic of 13th-century Austrian and Bavarian bracteate-influenced pfennigs. The overall design is bold and deeply struck, with strong linear forms typical of hammered episcopal coinage of the Passau mint.
