Ochsenfurt, a small Franconian town on the Main River, issued notgeld coinage during the zinc-rationing years of World War I, when the imperial government progressively requisitioned copper and other metals for munitions production. Municipal and district bodies across Germany filled the resulting small-change vacuum with locally authorized emergency issues — Ochsenfurt's Kommunalverband being one of hundreds of such minor issuers. The zinc composition here is consistent with the wartime material constraints that made these issues necessary in the first place.
