Neuhammer am Queis (now Świętoszów, Poland) housed one of the larger German prisoner-of-war camps during the First World War, holding primarily Russian and later Romanian captives. Camp-issued Lagergeld of this type served a practical administrative function: it prevented prisoners from accumulating Reichsmark currency that could facilitate escape or black-market dealings with guards, while still allowing internal canteen transactions.
The 1918 date places this issue in the final, chaotic months of the war, when supply disruptions made even small-denomination scrip difficult to redeem for goods. Many issues from this period were never formally cancelled or recalled.
