Reverse description The large numeral '1' is prominently struck in the center of the field, indicating the denomination of one Pfennig. Surrounding the central numeral is a beaded or dotted inner circle, beyond which the circular legend 'KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE' (small change substitute token) runs around the upper and lower arcs, flanked by star and pellet ornaments. The overall design is simple and functional, characteristic of German industrial emergency coinage (Notgeld) issued during the inflationary period of the early 1920s.

Additional information

Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH was the Munich engine manufacturer that, after financial restructuring and a change of direction in 1917, became Bayerische Motoren Werke — BMW. These zinc notgeld pieces circulated among the factory workforce during World War I, when the Imperial government's requisitioning of copper and nickel for shell casings stripped the economy of small-denomination coinage almost entirely. Zinc was the fallback material across hundreds of German industrial issuers during this period.

The connection to BMW's direct corporate predecessor makes this among the more historically loaded pieces of German industrial notgeld.
