Obverse description Central field dominated by a large crowned cypher comprising the conjoined initials M and H (Maximilian Henry), the monogram surmounted by an episcopal crown rendered in relief. The date 1663 is distributed to either side of the monogram, with the digits split across the left and right fields respectively. The flan is irregular in shape, characteristic of hammered coinage of the period. No surrounding legend is present, the monogram and date constituting the sole decorative and inscriptional elements.

Additional information

Maximilian Henry of Bavaria held the See of Hildesheim as one of several ecclesiastical appointments he accumulated simultaneously — he was also Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and Bishop of Liège and Münster. This kind of pluralism was technically prohibited by Tridentine reform but remained common among German Catholic nobility throughout the seventeenth century, enforced largely by Wittelsbach dynastic ambition rather than pastoral concern. The Hildesheim mint struck small billon issues like this to meet local transactional demand in a diocese still recovering economically from the Thirty Years' War, which had ended only fifteen years prior.
