| Additional information |
Magdeburg Saccharin Fabrik A.G. was one of dozens of German industrial firms that issued their own notgeld coinage during the acute metal shortages of World War I, when the Imperial government requisitioned copper and nickel for war production. Zinc, being cheaper and more available, became the default substitute. These factory tokens circulated internally — redeemable at company canteens and stores — effectively functioning as a private wage supplement at a time when small change had all but disappeared from everyday commerce.
