Magdeburg-Südost's saccharin plant issued this token during the First World War, when the German military's requisitioning of copper and nickel stripped ordinary commerce of usable small change. Factory scrip filled the void — accepted in company canteens and local shops operating within the plant's economic orbit. Iron was the material of necessity, not choice, and most examples corroded badly in circulation, which explains why survivors in any presentable condition are genuinely scarce relative to original issue numbers.
