Obverse description Central field features the crowned Hessian lion rampant, rendered in high relief within a plain field, surmounted by an ornate electoral crown. The lion, a traditional heraldic device of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, is depicted facing left in the rampant posture. The monogram 'H D' (for Hessen-Darmstadt) appears flanking the shield. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border running along the rim.
