Additional information

Hesse-Darmstadt's Louis I navigated the Napoleonic reorganization of German states with considerable skill — the Landgraviate was elevated to a Grand Duchy in 1806 as a direct reward for siding with France. This small copper issue spans the period from Napoleon's peak to his final defeat, a stretch during which the Rhine Confederation collapsed and Hesse-Darmstadt was absorbed into the German Confederation without Louis losing his throne.

The multi-year span of this type reflects continuous die use rather than distinct annual emissions — AKS 95 pieces are frequently found without legible date, worn smooth from heavy petty commerce circulation.
