An inner pearl circle frames the central field, within which the numeral '1' is prominently displayed. Krotoschin — known today as Krotoszyn, in west-central Poland — issued this zinc notgeld pfennig in 1917 as the German military's metal requisitions gutted the civilian coin supply. By that point, the Reichsbank had already begun pulling copper and nickel coinage for munitions production, leaving municipalities across Posen scrambling to fill the gap with locally authorized emergency issues. Zinc was the default fallback: cheap, plentiful, and deeply unpopular with the public, who associated it with wartime deprivation.
