Consumer cooperatives (Konsumvereine) across Germany issued their own small-denomination scrip during the chronic small change shortages of the early Weimar period, and this Magdeburg example is among the more localized — redeemable only within the cooperative's own network of member shops rather than any public circulation channel. The eGmbH legal designation marks it as an eingetragene Genossenschaft mit beschränkter Haftpflicht, the standard registered cooperative structure under the 1889 Genossenschaftsgesetz.

Cardboard pfennig notes of this type were typically lithographed locally and are prone to corner splits and edge softening from counter handling.
