Obverse description Two heraldic shields suspended by a loop and displayed side by side in the center of the field: the dexter shield bearing a crown device (representing the Bishopric of Würzburg) and the sinister shield depicting a lion passant (the arms of the Egloffstein family). A gothic letter 'N' appears in the lower field beneath the shields. The design is rendered in a simple, bold style characteristic of late medieval hammered bracteate coinage.

Additional information

John I of Egloffstein held the Würzburg see for only four years before his death in 1411, making the window for this issue unusually narrow. The Bishopric's pfennig coinage of this period was tied directly to episcopal authority over local markets and toll rights along the Main — small silver fractions like this one were the practical currency of that trade, not the bishop's larger prestige issues.
