| Reverse description | A small imperial orb (Reichsapfel) set within an ornate baroque cartouche occupies the central field, with the four digits of the date divided to either side of the orb. The design is characteristic of the small-denomination Pfennig coinage of the Electoral Saxon series, rendered with minimal but precise detail given the coin's modest module. |

John George III earned the nickname "the Saxon Mars" for his militarism, and his reign coincided with the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683 — an event that pulled Saxon troops into imperial service and strained electoral finances considerably. Small billon issues like this pfennig were the workhorse of everyday commerce while larger silver production was periodically disrupted by the demands of war funding.
He died in 1691, cutting this type's production window to roughly three years.
