Holzminden was one of the more notorious German officer camps of the First World War — later infamous for the mass tunnel escape of 1918, the largest PoW breakout of the conflict. This 1 Pfennig scrip predates that episode by two years, issued as part of the internal camp currency system that German authorities used to control prisoner purchasing power and prevent the accumulation of Reichsmark currency that might fund escape attempts.
Camp-printed scrip at this denomination is among the most ephemeral material from the German PoW system. One Pfennig bought almost nothing even then.
