Rabattmünzen Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung — "Discount Token Company, Limited" — was one of several private German firms issuing trading stamp tokens in the early twentieth century, a scheme in which retailers gave customers small-denomination pieces redeemable against future purchases. The system was a direct response to the success of American trading stamp companies, which had demonstrated that penny-increment loyalty tokens could dramatically increase repeat business. Hamburg was a natural hub for such ventures given its commercial density.
The nickel-plated zinc construction places this squarely in an era of base-metal economy tokens, where intrinsic value was deliberately kept below face value to discourage hoarding.
