A. Riebecksche Montanwerke was one of central Germany's major coal and mining conglomerates, operating extensive brown coal (lignite) extraction across the Halle region. Company scrip of this kind was issued for use in company-run canteens and stores — a practice common in German heavy industry before and during the First World War, when metal shortages pushed firms to produce their own low-denomination tokens rather than rely on a state mint stretched beyond capacity. Iron was the pragmatic choice: cheap, available, and already on site.
