Additional information

Gerhard of Schwarzburg held the Würzburg see from 1372 until his death in 1400, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the city's burghers and repeated jurisdictional disputes with neighboring secular lords. Small silver pfennigs of this type circulated primarily within the Franconian regional economy, where episcopal mints competed directly with output from the nearby imperial city of Nuremberg. The Ehwald reference situates this piece within a narrow five-year window at the very end of his episcopate.
