Reverse description Two facing busts shown side by side, rendered in a schematic medieval style typical of small hammered pfennig coinage from the Burgraviate of Nuremberg. The busts appear symmetrically arranged within the irregular square flan, with rudimentary facial features and no surrounding legend. The design is consistent with late 14th-century Franconian bracteate-style pfennig production. The flan edges are uneven, a characteristic result of the hand-hammered technique.

Additional information

Frederick V ruled the Burgraviate of Nuremberg during a period of acute tension with the city of Nuremberg itself — a conflict that culminated in 1388 when the city's forces destroyed the burgraval castle on the hill above town. This coin was struck across precisely that window of deteriorating relations, which ended Frederick's direct control over the region and effectively closed this issue.
