| Obverse description | Central field features the elaborate interlaced cypher of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I, composed of the intertwined initials FF rendered in ornate cursive script. The monogram is surmounted by a grand ducal crown with raised arches and a cross finial. The coin border is formed by a fine toothed or beaded rim encircling the entire design. No peripheral legend is present, the monogram occupying virtually the entire field in a bold, decorative relief. |

Mecklenburg-Schwerin was among the last German states to modernize its coinage system, and the tiny copper pfennig issues of Frederick Francis I reflect a duchy still operating largely outside the monetary reforms sweeping neighboring states. Frederick Francis I ruled for over fifty years — one of the longest reigns among German princes of the period — dying in 1837, just six years after this piece was struck.
