Obverse description Central field bears the numeral '1' in raised relief, surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The circular legend PAPIERFABRIK FOCKENDORF FOCKENDORF S.A. runs around the periphery, separated from the inner circle by a dotted border. The overall design is plain and utilitarian, consistent with emergency notgeld coinage of the World War I era. The outer rim features a continuous dotted or granulated edge pattern.

Additional information

Fockendorf's paper mill, located in Thuringia, issued notgeld coinage during the acute metal and currency shortages of the early Weimar period. Factory-issued iron pfennig pieces like this one were a practical response to the near-total disappearance of small change from circulation — workers needed to make purchases at company canteens and stores, and the Reichsbank could supply neither coin nor reliable small denominations. The issuing firm's own scrip filled the gap.
