Obverse description Central field displays the quartered coat of arms of Saxe-Altenburg, featuring the heraldic divisions of the Saxon and Ernestine territories rendered in fine detail, surmounted by an ornate ducal crown. A palm branch extends diagonally across the lower left of the shield. The surrounding legend, separated from the design by a plain inner border and an outer beaded border, reads H.S. ALTENB. SCHEIDE M., denoting Herzogthum Sachsen-Altenburg Scheidemünze (subsidiary coinage of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg).
