Ernest I ruled Saxe-Coburg and Gotha following the duchy's reorganization under the 1826 division of the Ernestine lands — a territorial reshuffle that dissolved Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and created the awkward dual-duchy arrangement his family would carry into the Victorian age. Small copper pfennigs of this type circulated across a patchwork of German states where currency interoperability was perpetually contested, predating the monetary standardization that the Zollverein would gradually impose after 1834.
