Küstrin issued its own emergency coinage in 1918 as the imperial supply chain for small denomination metal currency collapsed under wartime procurement demands. Iron had already replaced copper and nickel across most German municipal issues by this point, with the Reichsbank unable to guarantee deliveries to smaller civic authorities. Küstrin — a Prussian fortress town at the confluence of the Oder and Warthe rivers — was among hundreds of German municipalities forced into local monetary improvisation during the final year of the war.
