Additional information

Westfälisch-Anhaltische Sprengstoff AG was one of Germany's principal explosives manufacturers during the First World War, supplying the Imperial military with munitions while the Reich's metal supply collapsed under wartime demand. Like dozens of major industrial firms in 1917, the company issued its own notgeld coinage in zinc to keep small-denomination transactions functional among its workforce — the national mint system simply could not keep pace with both military hardware and everyday commerce simultaneously.
