| Reverse description | The central field features a stylized decorative device depicting a series of flowing wave-like or scroll motifs in relief, rendered in a simplified Art Nouveau-influenced manner, possibly representing the mineral springs for which Bad Mergentheim is renowned. The legend 'NOTGELD' arcs across the upper field in capital letters. The date '1920' is displayed in widely spaced numerals along the lower portion of the field. The overall composition is simple and unadorned, consistent with the emergency coinage typology of the Weimar Republic era. |

Bad Mergentheim issued this iron notgeld pfennig in 1920 as Germany's postwar coin shortages dragged well past the armistice. The town had been the administrative seat of the Teutonic Knights from 1525 until Napoleon dissolved the Order's German territories in 1809 — a history the municipality leaned on heavily in its civic identity, though wartime metal requisitions left little room for sentiment in the choice of iron.
