Obverse description The heraldic bear of Anhalt, passant to the left and surmounted by a princely crown, is depicted striding atop the crenellated ramparts of a castle gateway rendered in low relief. The architectural element below shows a characteristic arched portal flanked by tower-like masonry walls, representing the traditional arms of Bernburg. The design occupies the full field of the flan without a surrounding legend, relying entirely on the armorial imagery to identify the issuing authority. The bold, somewhat crude engraving style is characteristic of late 18th-century provincial German copper coinage.

Reverse description The reverse bears a five-line centred inscription in serif capital letters filling the field, stating the denomination, denomination type, and date of issue. The numeral '1' appears at the top of the legend, flanked by small six-pointed ornamental stars serving as separators. Below follow the words PFENNIG, SCHEIDE, MUNTZ, and the date 1797 on successive lines, the whole composition occupying virtually the entire flan without a surrounding border legend. This plain typographic layout is typical of small-denomination Scheidemünze (subsidiary coinage) of the German states in the late 18th century.
