Albrecht I of Habsburg held Styria as duke while simultaneously pursuing — and ultimately securing — the German kingship in 1298, the year this issue begins. His assassination by his own nephew Johann in 1308 closes the date range. The political pressure of consolidating Habsburg authority across Austria, Styria, and Carinthia simultaneously meant local Graz issues like this one served an intensely practical fiscal role during a period of aggressive territorial administration rather than stable governance.
