Lassan is a small coastal town on the Peene estuary in Pomerania, and this 1920 Pfennig piece belongs to the flood of German municipal notgeld issued when the Reichsbank could no longer guarantee small denomination coinage through the economic disruptions following the First World War. City administrations across Germany printed their own emergency fractional currency, and Lassan — with a population that barely reached a few thousand — was no different. The watermark is the only concession to anti-counterfeiting on what was, functionally, a hyper-local IOU.
