Obverse description Central field occupied by the arms of Worms: a divided shield bearing an upright key, the traditional civic symbol of the city. The initial letter W, denoting Worms, appears prominently above the shield. The coin is struck on a roughly circular flan with an irregular beaded border encircling the design, characteristic of late 17th-century hammered municipal coinage.

Additional information

Worms in 1681 was a city still scarred by the Thirty Years' War, which had ended barely three decades earlier and left much of the Rhineland economically gutted. Small municipal silver issues like this one filled a chronic gap in petty coinage that the larger territorial mints had no interest in supplying. At 0.17 g, the silver content was almost negligible — the coin's value rested almost entirely on civic authority rather than metal.

Worms would be razed by French forces under Mélac just eight years later, in 1689, during the War of the Grand Alliance. Surviving civic coinage from the pre-destruction period is genuinely scarce for that reason alone.
